The Principal Planner position offers the opportunity to build partnerships with local planners in the crafting of local comprehensive plans by providing direct technical assistance during the comprehensive planning process. The selected candidate will be involved in reviewing and evaluating local comprehensive plans for consistency with the goals and policies of the State, and will work with subject-matter experts to develop planning information bulletins, presentations, and other forms of planning guidance for the general planning community on innovative planning topics. This position will lead and build TLC’s conservation program, which includes a small but talented and dedicated staff, to develop conservation strategies, increase the pace of land and water protection, convene key stakeholders and partners, and build the case for public support for funding conservation initiatives. For this key position a leader is sought who will achieve meaningful results, build effective public and private partnerships, sometimes with non-traditional partners and stakeholders, and will help establish TLC as a national model for how land trusts can build a movement to achieve healthy, resilient metropolitan areas in the 21st century.
The Director of Land and Water Protection will be responsible for shaping and implementing strategies that will protect, conserve, enhance and best utilize natural systems for the benefit of people and nature in the Triangle’s urban and suburban environments, as well as the wild and working lands in the surrounding rural regions. The strategy will also include ways to increase the resilience of the Triangle region to environmental changes and challenges, including water quality and quantity in the rapidly growing metropolitan area.
The Director will develop and implement strategies to increase the pace of conservation to safeguard clean water, protect critical wildlife habitat, support farming communities and the vibrant local food movement, and connect people with nature in the six-county region of the Triangle. The Director will work to broaden the constituency for conservation by supporting meaningful ways for members, volunteers and other stakeholders to engage with the organization. In partnership with the Executive Director, the successful candidate will serve as a principal contact to government agencies and officials, partner organizations, foundations, media, academic communities and the public.

South Western Regional Planning Agency (CT) Executive Director

The South Western Regional Planning Agency (SWRPA) seeks an experienced, highly-qualified professional to fill the position of Executive Director. Since Connecticut has regions – and not county government – SWRPA functions as a regional planning agency and services eight municipalities in Connecticut.
Among its various responsibilities, SWRPA carries out the federal transportation planning process on behalf of its sister organization, the South Western Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO); prepares and updates a regional plan of conservation and development; reviews proposed municipal land use actions to assess potential intermunicipal impacts; assists its member municipalities in preparing emergency management plans; is launching a program on climate resiliency; and is very active in advancing managed lanes as an aspect of value pricing, is promoting transit oriented development and improved rail and bus transit.
The ideal candidate will hold a master’s degree in urban and regional planning and have seven or more years of professional planning experience, with at least three years at the management level. Applicants meeting the experience requirements with a master’s degree in a related field such as public administration will also be considered. Membership in the American Institute of Certified Planners is highly desirable. The skills and knowledge necessary to successfully perform the functions of the Executive Director position include strong management and financial skills; strong familiarity with the principles and practices of transportation and land-use planning; outstanding communication skills; the ability to direct staff and consultants in complex planning studies; solid familiarity with the state and federal legislative processes; and a variety of other skills. Stewardship Coordinator, Saratoga, NY

Saratoga P.L.A.N. is a nonprofit land trust organization conserving land throughout Saratoga County through fee title land acquisitions, conservation easements, and community planning. It achieves its mission through strategic partnerships with volunteers, donors, local governments, businesses, and other nonprofit organizations.
The Stewardship Coordinator is primarily responsible for caring for the lands that the organization owns and for the conservation easements that it holds. The Stewardship Coordinator will build a base of support for the organization and for land conservation in the region by engaging supporters of Saratoga P.L.A.N. and the community-at-large through volunteer, educational, and recreational place-based outdoor programming.
As a member of the staff team at Saratoga P.L.A.N., the Stewardship Coordinator will assist with land protection, community planning, outreach, and fundraising activities of the organization. The Stewardship Coordinator will provide staff support to the Stewardship Committee and any other committees formed for outreach and/or education. The Stewardship Coordinator will report to the Executive Director and comply with all Saratoga PLAN policies and procedures and adhere to all Land Trust Alliance standards and practices. Conservation and Land Use Specialist
The Cornell Department of Natural Resources seeks a Conservation and Land Use Specialist for its Hudson River Estuary Biodiversity Outreach Project. Since 2001, this project has provided technical assistance to communities in New York’s Hudson Valley to incorporate biodiversity conservation into local land use planning. The Hudson River Estuary Conservation and Land Use Specialist will work closely with the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to help local government decision-makers, land trusts, watershed groups, local and regional non-profit conservation organizations, and state agencies to conserve biodiversity of the Hudson River estuary watershed, with a focus on Albany, Columbia, Greene, and Rensselaer counties. The estuary watershed area covers the counties bordering the 150-mile long Hudson River Estuary from the City of Troy to New York City. This position is located in Albany, NY. Travel throughout Albany, Greene, Columbia, and Rensselaer Counties and to New Paltz and Ithaca is required.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources, environmental planning, or related field; 3-5 years of professional experience in the conservation or planning field or equivalent combination. Excellent oral and written English communication skills including ability to convey technical information to diverse lay and professional audiences. Familiarity with municipal land use planning and conservation planning.
Position is funded through December 31, 2013; an extension will be based on funding availability.
